So, you’ve signed up for your first Product Camp un-conference. Congratulations!
You’re about to enter a world of spontaneous sessions, lively discussions, and a whole lot of learning. If you’re feeling a mix of excitement and dread, don’t worry—you’re not alone. Whether you’re nervous, unsure of what to expect, or just plain curious, here’s how to make the most of your first un-conference experience at Product Camp.
1. Tame Those First-Time Nerves (Or at Least Pretend to)
Let’s get one thing straight: it’s normal to feel nervous. An unconference can be intimidating, especially if you’re used to more structured events. But here’s the good news: un-conferences are all about organic interaction. There’s no pressure to deliver a polished presentation or impress anyone with your knowledge. The goal is to share, learn, and grow together.
One way to calm those nerves is to focus on what excites you about the event. Is it the chance to dive into a topic you’re passionate about? The opportunity to meet people with similar interests? Whatever it is, let that excitement guide you. And if you need a quick confidence boost, remember that everyone is there to connect and learn—just like you.
And if you’re still struggling, then say hello to the friendly volunteers. They’d be more than happy to help you connect with people.
2. Go With the Flow (And Trust the Process)
Un-conferences are unique because they don’t follow a strict agenda. The schedule is often created on the spot, based on the interests of the participants. This might sound chaotic, but it’s actually one of the best parts of the experience. It allows for spontaneous discussions and the freedom to explore topics that truly matter to you.
To make the most of this, keep an open mind and be flexible. Don’t worry if a session doesn’t go as planned or if you end up in a discussion that veers off course. Sometimes, the best insights come from unexpected conversations. And if you’re feeling adventurous, consider leading a session yourself. It doesn’t have to be formal—just a topic you’re passionate about and willing to explore with others.
As we learn and grow, the format can change! For the 1st time in 2024, Product Camp Melbourne decided to have a session after lunch to play product focused (& non product focused) games. We found that it was a good way to move around, meet people and get the blood pumping.
3. Break the Ice: Questions That Aren’t About Work (But Are Still Fun)
One of the challenges of any event is starting a conversation with someone new. Instead of the usual small talk about work, try asking questions that spark more personal and engaging discussions. Here are a few to get you started:
- What’s the most interesting book you’ve read recently? This can lead to some fascinating exchanges and might even add a new title to your reading list.
- If you could instantly learn any skill, what would it be? This question often uncovers people’s hidden talents or passions.
- What’s your favorite way to unwind after a long day? Everyone has their own unique method of relaxing, and sharing these can lead to some fun stories.
- What inspired you to come to this unconference? The classic and time-tested goodie (use case count: 1 – me!) It’s a great way to learn what motivates others and find common ground.
These questions help steer the conversation away from the usual work talk and allow you to connect with others on a more personal level. Plus, they’re much more interesting than the standard “What do you do?” question.
4. Remember: Everyone’s in the Same Boat
It’s easy to feel like you’re the only one who’s nervous, but the truth is, everyone has those moments of doubt—yes, even the people who seem completely at ease. Un-conferences are designed to be inclusive, so if you’re feeling out of place, know that others are probably feeling the same. If you see someone standing alone, why not go over and say hello? Chances are, they’re looking for someone to connect with too.
And here’s a pro tip: if you find a session that doesn’t quite meet your expectations, it’s totally okay to leave and join another one. The whole point of an un-conference is to find value in the discussions that resonate with you. So don’t be afraid to move around and explore.
Plus when you network with people, you can always grab notes from each other!
5. Embrace the Unpredictability (And Enjoy the Ride)
The best thing about an un-conference is its unpredictability. You never know what kind of discussions you’ll stumble into, who you’ll meet, or what new ideas you’ll walk away with. Embrace the spontaneity and be open to trying new things. Whether you’re participating in a session, leading one, or just soaking up the energy of the event, remember to have fun.
And if all else fails, there’s always the food.
So go ahead, dive into your first Product Camp with an open mind and a willingness to explore. You might just discover new connections, fresh perspectives, and a few great stories to tell.
The Tech and Other on the day Stuff:
- Make sure you’re on the slack channels! This is the best way to stay informed about what’s happening on the day.
- Stay tuned to the other social media channels:
- Know where the toilets are located
- Keep your eyes open for when the schedule is published (after voting!)
- Always have a bottle of water and snacks in case you get peckish
- A battery pack is a must! If you have great battery life, I’m happy for you (and slightly jealous)
- A notepad is handy. If you feel the need to stop using digital media, I’ve found a small notebook to be really handy
- Wear comfortable shoes. You’re going to be on your feet for most of the day, mixing and mingling. Comfort is key.
I hope this guide helps you enjoy Product Camp Melbourne as much as I have. If you’re looking at this event, and are still on the fence, check out all the posts about it. And if all else fails, come on down. The worst that could happen is you’ve spent your day. The best? Who knows… the connections and opportunities are endless!!
If you’ve attended Product Camp Melbourne for the first time, what would you add?
Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!
